In the late 1950's, world class sports car racing came to the Island of Cuba, in the form of the Cuban Grand Prix. In 1957, 1958, and 1960 spectators (many of them tourists from the United States) flocked to Havana to see drivers dice it up in wheel-to-wheel competition. At first, the races were an attempt by the government to portray Cuba in a positive light, but the 1958 kidnapping of Juan Manuel Fangio proved that Cuba was an unstable place to hold an international race.
When Castro seized power in January of 1959, the Cuban Grand prix was cancelled, but the race would return. Two years later, the final sanctioned domestic sports car race was held on Havana's Avenida del Puerto.
