Schirra was one of the original 7 Project Mercury Astronauts and he achieved the first space rendezvous with the Gemini Program. He also commanded Apollo 7.
Wally is standing next to a Northtrop T-38 in this 1963 photograph. The T-38 is a two seater trainer jet introduced in 1961 and will be phased out this year after over 60 years of service to both the Air Force and NASA.
