When Ms. Welch began receiving critical letters from feminists complaining she was objectifying women, she told O'Neill she was being " crucified " for taking the role. The conversation spawned perhaps the most iconic image of her ever taken by O'Neill when he built a wooden cross in a studio and hung Raquel from it, wearing her notorious bikini. O'Neill had second thoughts and refused to release the image until 30 years later.
